The Role of Artificial Intelligence in Managerial Decision-Making: A Systematic Review of Approaches and Implications

This systematic review synthesizes contemporary research on the role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in managerial decision-making, particularly under conditions of market uncertainty and organizational complexity. The literature consistently portrays AI as a transformative and augmentative capability that expands human cognitive capacity by processing vast and heterogeneous datasets. Through advanced analytics, AI enhances resource allocation efficiency, strengthens risk identification and forecasting, and supports more rigorous evidence-based decisions. By automating routine administrative and operational tasks, AI frees managerial attention for higher-order strategic thinking and creative problem-solving, thereby fostering greater organizational adaptability and innovation. Despite these benefits, the review highlights several critical challenges that complicate AI adoption in managerial contexts. Foremost is the tension between the managerial demand for transparency and the opaque, often inscrutable nature of many AI models—a “Black Box” dilemma that raises concerns about accountability, ethical compliance, and stakeholder trust. Additional issues include algorithmic bias embedded in training data, growing technological dependency, and the complexity of navigating diverse international regulatory frameworks. Emerging solutions, such as AI Data Quality Indicators (DQI), aim to evaluate AI-generated outputs for validity, fairness, and ethical soundness, underscoring the importance of high-quality data inputs, managerial algorithmic literacy, and robust governance structures. Overall, the findings indicate that while AI is reshaping managerial processes and enhancing decision accuracy, human judgment remains indispensable. Effective managerial decision-making in the age of AI relies on a synergistic interplay between technological capabilities and critical human oversight, especially in volatile and uncertain strategic environments.
